Pending Transaction How to Keep Records and Seek Help

You tap Pay on Google Pay or PhonePe, the screen spins, and then you see it Pending. Your bank balance shows the money has left your account. But the other person has not received anything. No confirmation. No receipt. Just a blank wait.
This situation happens to thousands of Indians every single day. In 2025, UPI processed over 228 billion transactions worth nearly Rs 300 lakh crore, according to NPCI data. With that kind of volume, even a tiny failure rate creates millions of stuck payments across the country. So if your pending transaction is causing you stress, you are not alone, and there is a clear path to resolve it.
The key to getting your money back, or getting answers, is documentation. What you save in the first few minutes can save you days of follow-up later.
How Long Should a Pending Transaction Take?
Before you panic, it helps to know the official timelines.
For a person-to-person P2P UPI transfer where money was debited from your account but not credited to the recipient, RBI guidelines require the bank to reverse the transaction by the end of the next working day. This is called the T+1 rule, where T is the date of your transaction.
For payments to merchants like an online shop, a food delivery app, or a booking site, the timeline is T+5, meaning up to five business days.
| Type of Transaction | Maximum Wait Time (RBI Guideline) |
|---|---|
| UPI person to person (P2P) | T+1 (next working day) |
| UPI to merchant (P2M) | T+5 (up to 5 business days) |
| Debit/credit card at merchant | 5 to 10 business days |
These timelines apply under RBI Circular DPSS.CO.PD No.629/02.01.014/2019-20. If your money does not return within these windows, you are eligible to escalate the matter and even claim compensation.
What Records to Keep Right Away

This is the part most people skip, and then regret. The moment you notice a pending transaction that looks stuck, start collecting the following. You do not need to print anything. Screenshots saved to your phone gallery are enough to start.
1. Screenshot of the transaction screen
Open your UPI app PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, or your bank’s own app and go to the transaction history. Find the stuck payment and take a screenshot of the full screen. Make sure the screenshot clearly shows:
- The date and time of the transaction
- The amount
- The transaction reference number or UPI transaction ID usually a 12-digit number
- The current status Pending, Failed, or In Process
2. Screenshot of the bank SMS or notification
Your bank usually sends an SMS the moment money leaves your account. Save this SMS. If the SMS came as a push notification from an app, screenshot it from your notification history.
3. Your bank account statement entry
Log in to your bank’s mobile app or internet banking and find the entry for this transaction. Take a screenshot or download the mini statement. This shows the debit from your account and confirms the amount.
4. Note down the exact details
Write these in your phone notes or on paper:
- Transaction ID or UPI Reference Number / UTR number
- Date and time
- Amount
- Your account number last 4 digits are enough
- Recipient’s UPI ID or phone number
- App used
5. Save all complaint communication
Every time you call the bank helpline or raise a complaint through an app, save the complaint reference number. Screenshot every chat message you send to customer support.
Under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, electronic records like screenshots have statutory recognition in India. A screenshot with full context date, amount, transaction ID visible carries real weight if you ever need to escalate formally.
Step-by-Step Guide to Seeking Help
Step 1 Wait Out the Official Window
If your UPI transfer to a friend or family member is showing pending, wait until the end of the next working day. If it was a merchant payment hotel, e-commerce site, gaming or sports platform, wait up to five working days. Most pending transactions reverse automatically. Do not attempt to make the same payment again during this time, as that may result in a double deduction.
Step 2 Raise a Complaint Through Your App
If the money has not returned after the official window, open the same UPI app you used for the payment. Every major app has a support or help section.
- Google Pay: Go to your profile picture, then Help and Feedback, then Transaction Issues.
- PhonePe: Go to Help, then Banking and Payments, then select the transaction.
- Paytm: Tap on the 24×7 Help section and search for pending transaction.
- BHIM or bank apps: Look for the Complaint or Raise Dispute option in the menu.
When raising the complaint, provide your transaction ID, the amount, the date, and the screenshot you saved in Step 1. You will receive a complaint reference number. Save it.
Step 3 Call or Visit Your Bank
If the app complaint does not get resolved in 2 to 3 days, contact your bank directly. Call their customer care helpline available on the back of your debit card or on the bank’s official website. Tell them you have a stuck pending transaction and provide the transaction ID.
If you made the payment using a platform connected to lotus365 cricket or a similar sports-related service, mention whether the payment was to a merchant or to a personal UPI ID, as this determines which RBI timeline applies.
Ask the bank representative for:
- A written confirmation that your complaint has been registered
- A complaint or ticket reference number
- An expected resolution date
Keep a log of every call: date, time, approximate duration, and what was discussed.
Step 4 File a Complaint with NPCI
If your bank is unresponsive after your complaint, you can raise the issue directly with the National Payments Corporation of India NPCI, which manages the UPI system. Go to the NPCI Dispute Redressal Mechanism portal or call the NPCI UPI helpline at 1800-120-1740 toll-free.
Provide the same transaction details and attach your screenshots. NPCI can push the concerned bank to resolve the issue faster.
Step 5 Escalate to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman
If your complaint is not resolved within 30 days of raising it with the bank, you have the right to escalate to the Reserve Bank of India’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme RB-IOS, 2021. This is a free service. You pay no fees.
You can file online at cms.rbi.org.in or call the RBI helpline at 14440. You can also write by email to crpc@rbi.org.in.
When filing, upload:
- The screenshot of the original transaction
- Your bank complaint reference number
- Any written replies from the bank
- Your bank account statement showing the debit
Banks are required to respond within 30 days of receiving the Ombudsman complaint. This escalation works, and it puts your case on an official record.
The Rs 100 Per Day Compensation Rule Most People Miss This

Here is something very few Indians know. Under RBI’s failed transaction framework, if your bank does not reverse a failed or stuck UPI payment within the prescribed timeline T+1 for P2P, T+5 for merchant payments, you are entitled to compensation of Rs 100 per day for the delay.
This compensation should be credited to your account automatically. But in practice, many banks do not do it unless you ask. When you file a complaint with your bank or NPCI, specifically mention that you are requesting the reversal amount plus applicable daily compensation as per RBI guidelines.
Do not share your UPI PIN, OTP, or card number with anyone during this process. Banks, NPCI, and RBI officials will never ask for these details when processing a refund.
Keeping Records When the Platform Is a Betting or Gaming App
If your stuck payment involves an app where you top up your gaming or sports account, the process is the same but requires one extra step. When you use something like the lotus365 apk to make a deposit that stays pending, save the in-app receipt or payment confirmation page as a screenshot in addition to the UPI app record. The platform’s own transaction reference number is different from your UPI transaction ID, and you may need both when contacting the bank.
A note of caution: online betting and gaming transactions fall under a regulated space. Age restrictions apply you must be 18 or older. Always check the legal status of such platforms in your state before using them.
Quick Recap
- Screenshot everything within the first hour: the transaction screen, bank SMS, and account statement entry.
- Note the transaction ID, date, amount, and all complaint reference numbers.
- Give the payment its full waiting period: T+1 for person-to-person UPI, T+5 for merchant payments.
- Escalate through the app first, then your bank, then NPCI, then the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in if 30 days pass.
- Ask specifically for Rs 100 per day compensation if the reversal comes late.
- Never share your PIN or OTP with anyone during this process.
